BACKGROUND

At the time when the Iraq War was nearing an end and the United States was ten-years into war in Afghanistan, over 200,000 U.S. service members had already been diagnosed with TBI. With nothing available to measure the blasts that often cause undetectable head injuries, soldiers and medical personnel were forced to face the effects of these injuries with inconsistent and subjective data.

Seeing this need and the opportunity to improve the lives of soldiers and their families, BlackBox Biometrics set out to measure the unseen. Funded by a DARPA grant, a small team assembled to develop a solution providing better triage data. The result was the Blast Gauge®, a revolutionary sensor that has since been outfitted on U.S. Special Forces, the Army, and SWAT teams across the nation. Coupled with proprietary software, the complete system captures and interprets complex data associated with concussive events. This means faster and more accurate treatment for those serving on the frontlines, and better research for advancing the study of TBI.

BLAST GAUGE
SYSTEM

The Blast Gauge® System is the complete solution for measuring blast exposure.

The Blast Gauge® System is a 3-sensor set worn on the helmet, chest, and shoulder that records the pressure and acceleration from explosive blasts. Wireless technology allows for real-time data transfer for quick triage, or the green, yellow, and red status LEDs provide instant exposure data at the press of a button. A micro-USB connection allows full time-based data to be later analyzed by medical personnel for tracing to emergent symptoms.

Each gauge weighs around an ounce and a half, and takes up less than one and a half cubic inches of space. Its flexible mounting design allows tool-free attachment to helmets, PALS webbing, or physical structures like vehicles and buildings.

The Blast Gauge® System has been deployed on U.S. Special Forces, all branches of the U.S. Military, more than 10 international militaries, and over 100 law enforcement agencies around the globe. It’s also used in research labs and field studies worldwide. Not to mention, it is member tested and recommended by the National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA) and the International Association of Bomb Technicians and Investigators (IABTI), and is proudly made in the USA.

LINX IAS

The Linx IAS® empowers parents, coaches, and players with real-time feedback on potential concussion-causing impacts.

Concussions have become an epidemic in sports, with new research continuing to shed light on the harmful long-term effects of repeated head impacts. Now anyone can receive immediate and cumulative impact data on a smartphone or tablet by wearing the Linx IAS during activity.

Parents can get notified the moment a potential concussion-causing impact occurs during practice or a game—even if they are at home or work. Athletes can tap a button on the device to see a green, yellow, or red LED to know when a hit was too hard to shrug off. Coaches can connect over 128 players to one iOS or Android device for an up-to-the-second dashboard of their players’ statuses. Even doctors and trainers can benefit from the crucial information gathered to more accurately triage and treat any head injuries.

The Linx IAS® device only weighs as much as a nickel, yet the patent-pending architecture boasts a 3-axis gyroscope, accelerometer, and Bluetooth® technology for connecting to a device up to hundreds of feet away. The battery life will last up to 14 hours on a single charge. And you know the quality is second-to-none when it’s made by the same company building sensors for U.S. Special Forces, the FBI, and SWAT teams around the world.

Linx IAS® was declared a 2015 CES Innovation Awards 3-time Honoree winner in the categories of Wearable Technologies; Tech for a Better World; and Fitness, Sports & Biotech.
